La Academia de la Televisión de los Estados Unidos realizó la 72° edición de los premios Emmy en reconocimiento a lo mejor de la pantalla chica del país. La ceremonia, atípica por la pandemia del coronavirus, tuvo como principales protagonistas a Succession, de HBO, y a la comedia canadiense Schitt’s Creek.

Succession se quedó con cinco estatuillas en drama: mejor serie, mejor dirección (Andrij Parekh), mejor actor principal (Jeremy Strong), mejor actriz invitada (Cherry Jones) y mejor guión (Jesse Armstrong).

La más premiada fue Schitt’s Creek, que se quedó con siete de las nueve estatuillas que se entregaron en el rubro comedia, incluyendo mejor serie, mejor dirección (Andrew Cividino y Dan Levy), mejor actor (Eugene Lev) y mejor actriz (Catherine O’Hara).

Por su parte, HBO recibió 30 premios Emmy® - 11 trofeos durante la 72ª entrega de los Premios Primetime Emmy, consagrándose así y una vez más como la plataforma más galardonada del año.

WATCHMEN, la candidata con más nominaciones por un total de 26, fue la producción más premiada, incluyendo los trofeos a Mejor Miniserie, Mejor Guion en Miniserie, Película o Especial Dramático y Mejor Actriz en Miniserie. SUCCESSION obtuvo 7 premios, incluyendo a la Mejor Serie Dramática, Mejor Dirección en Serie Dramática, Mejor Guion en Serie Dramática y Mejor Actor en Serie Dramática.

EUPHORIA se llevó 3 premios, incluyendo Mejor Actriz en Serie Dramática; y LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER, que fue galardonada con el premio a la Mejor Serie de Talk Show y Variedades, termino la noche con 5 estatuillas.

Durante la noche más importante de la televisión también tuvieron éxito otras producciones de HBO, como BAD EDUCATION, I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE, THE APOLLO e INSECURE, entre otros.

A raíz de la pandemia por el coronavirus, el evento se llevó a cabo por primera vez de manera virtual. Comenzó una hora antes de la ceremonia de entrega de estatuillas, con una previa conducida por Ileana Rodríguez y Lety Sahagun, que contó con juegos, entrevistas y trivias.

Luego se dio inicio a la ceremonia de entrega de los premios, también conocidos como los “Oscar de la televisión”. Jimmy Kimmel fue el anfitrión del evento, que se realizó en el Staples Center de Los Ángeles.
